Lake Norman Charter School accepts applications from November 1 through January 31 of each year. All applications received during that period become eligible for the school's public lottery. However, The NC Department of Public Instruction, Division of Charter Schools, mandates that applications from out-of-state residents are not eligible, unless proof of North Carolina residency can be provided prior to the date of the lottery. Any application received after January 31 is NOT entered in the lottery, but is kept and added to the waiting list, if a waiting list is created.
Beginning with the 2009-2010 school year lottery, a computerized lottery program written specifically for LNCS was introduced. When the lottery is run, the program reads in two spreadsheets of input data--one listing the number of openings and waitlist postions at each grade level, and the other contains the list of applicants. The program assigns a random number to every single applicant. The selected applicants are then either placed or waitlisted according to space availability in order from the highest random number to the lowest. Once all placements have been made, the program creates a set of spreadsheets of different subsets of the results. The results are projected on wide screen for those in attendance to view. Spaces are filled in order from the waiting list through the 20th school day.
